Medical/Dental Office Management program

 Jan Derouin was laid off from her job as an executive secretary. “I figured I’d change direction,” she said, “and the medical field seemed like it would be more open to jobs.”

She saw an MTTI commercial on TV and eventually enrolled in the Medical/Dental Office Management program. “The computer part of it wasn’t new to me, but it allowed me to brush up on a few things I didn’t know.”

Jan praised the medical part of the curriculum and the teaching. "My instructor made it enjoyable, because some of the things could have been be so dry. I learned a lot in that class because I didn’t have a medical background. Scheduling and electronic medical records, terminology were well taught, and the coding was good, too.”

Jan's original goal was to become a medical coder. “I found it very challenging,” she said, “but I couldn’t see myself doing (just coding) all day.”

Two months after graduation Jan was hired as a Medical Secretary at Coastal Medical in East Providence. "The Career Services representative was really great. I had a lot of interviews. This was like maybe the third lead she gave me."

“It’s a very busy practice,”Jan said, “but it’s a totally different atmosphere from the corporate world. I love it!"
